Right now we are battling an enemy we don’t even know though we are fearful of him, though we know it is deadly and ultimately we do want to defeat it. It is not easy to fight an unequal battle. Reasons for this go far deep into the human history, into our own life time when we saw so many changes. We are used to living a comfortable life at the cost of so many vital factors. Covid 19 is a challenge to all our parameters of comfort, mechanization, fast traffic and fast food. Right now, at this moment we have been forced to live a simpler life, a life within the four walls of our homes, a life of pure food, pure air and pure water. Covid 19 has put a question mark on the modern life style as it is based on exploitation of natural resources like water, air, vegetation , the wildlife. Our pride of being the supreme in the biological chain is in dole drums. Nature is asserting itself by showing that a simpler, equittable life is safer. Just a few months back Delhi, the capital of our proud country, was becoming an unlivable place . Its air was so polluted. Who did it? The answers are too obvious. The writing on the wall is ‘REDUCE EXPLOITING THE NATURAL RESOURCES unmindfully.
We had never thought that the possibility of human elimination would come surface this way. One had imagined and forecast end of earth through a massive deluge, water holocaust, world war, even biological warfare. With all humility we have to admit, nature, God or any force that runs the world has found an ingenious way to teach a lesson to the human race. This time the big nations are not the winners. The most powerful seem to be the most vulnerable. Why is the sky bluer? Why people in Saharanpur could see the snow topped peaks of himalayas? How is it that Ganga flows cleaner? Why animal life is claiming urban spaces? How the ozone layer has healed itself? Why the fatal accidents on our roadshave decreased so fast? Why every city has cleaner air levels? Again the answers are too obvious. There is a tilt towards a simpler life style. There is something which tells us we are a small particle in the frame of things - we are not the masters. Nature seeks co-existence not subjugation of all living resources for the sole benefit of human race.
We can draw a list. Food, traffic, air, water, the trees, the birds and bees all are there to build a happy order. Everything has its place in the ecological order. Let us, for once think of a slower world that eats pure, drinks purer water, use automobiles to reach somewhere not marauding others, If we humans can do it during the lockout and claim our life back, we have to rethink the concept of progress.
